Frizzle Fry, released on the independent Caroline label in 1990, captures the San Francisco Bay area thrash-funk trio at their energetic peak. The stripped-down production complements the band's raw sound and showcases the almost live performances of standout tracks such as the antiwar anthem "Too Many Puppies," the stoner-inspired "Spegetti Western," and the high-spirited "Groundhog's Day."
Larry LaLonde's guitar work is more melodious and focused compared to the experimental style heard on later albums like "Pork Soda" (many of the guitar riffs were originally written by the band's original guitarist, Todd Huth). Bassist Les Claypool, on the other hand, delivers an outstanding performance, channeling the spirit of a scrappy Larry Graham or a rebellious John Wetton. His bass slaps, slides, and squeaks perfectly complement drummer Tim Alexander's powerful, jazz-influenced beats. Claypool's eccentric vocals are reminiscent of P.I.L.-era John Lydon, with lyrics that touch on topics like Corn Chex, striped bass, and adult films.
Overall, "Frizzle Fry" marks an inspired and confident studio debut for the band, solidifying their unique sound and paving the way for future success. --James Rotondi
